What does a Joro spider look like?
Joro spiders have bodies that are one inch in length with legs that are up to four inches in length. Their bodies are blue-gray and yellow, with red markings on their abdomens. Their webs are golden in color and can often be seen in trees and on power lines, porches and more.
Where did they come from?
This invasive species is native to Japan, China, Korea, and Taiwan and was first discovered in Georgia in 2013. While we don’t know for certain, experts at the University of Georgia suspect Joro spiders found their way here through shipping containers or among packing materials that were shipped here, such as crates or pallets, or even on live plant materials. Since arriving in the U.S., they have spread to other areas around the East coast.
Why are Joros so invasive?
Joro spiders are able to travel by “ballooning.” This takes place when young spiders (also known as spiderlings) release a small strand of silk that then latches on to a current of air and they ride the wind to a new location. Each spring, their offspring repeats the process.
